Local celebrities lock step tonight with canines and hit the runway, their modeling talents on display at the Southern Arizona Humane Society's ninth annual Puttin' on the Dog fundraiser fashion show.

KVOA-TV (Channel 4 ) anchor Martha Vasquez is among those who have been preparing for a turn on the catwalk. This meant a trip to one of the participating boutiques, Maya Palace, on Monday, where she found herself making a tough decision: which dress? Vasquez settled on a long, rhinestone-embellished, gold and silver number by Cassandra Stone.

Maya Palace owner Susy Kopplin, 56, has loaned clothes and participated in the fashion show for several years. And aside from her generosity of time and merchandise, Kopplin has also been a pretty good sport. Last year, while all dolled up and ready to walk, she had an unexpected surprise.
"It was the funniest thing," Kopplin said on the phone from her East Broadway store. "The little dog peed on my shoe."

Vasquez isn't expecting any such comedic blunder for herself. She'll be walking with Tony, her Labrador retriever/Shar-Pei mix. Tony was adopted in 2006 from the SAHS. "I fell in love with him," said Vasquez, who did the fundraiser last year.

While wearing Maya Palace fashions is something Vasquez, 53, enjoys, it's her love of animals that gets her to the event, which earned $165,000 last year from ticket sales and a silent auction. "Animals can't speak for themselves, so somebody has got to do it," she said. "That's why I do it."
