During the past few years, we've seen new apparel lines being introduced earlier, with an increasing number of distributors debuting lines in the fall. We've also seen equipment being introduced throughout the year, sometimes even when it's still in the prototype stage. Still, they all make their way to the Imprinted Sportswear Show in Long Beach, Calif., where vendors can grab the attention of the industry's largest gathering of apparel decorators.
The 2007 edition of ISS Long Beach, held Jan. 19-21, was no exception. Tajima USA Sales & Support by Hirsch Intl., Hauppauge, N.Y., introduced the Neo2, the second generation of its compact embroidery machine, and announced the upcoming premier of the latest version of its Tajima DG/ML by Hirsch software.
SWF/Mesa Distributors, Fort Worth, Texas, introduced the industry's first 1,500-stitch-per-minute multihead embroidery machine, dubbed the Dream Machine, as well as a 6-needle portable machine, the Sub Compact-6, designed for the home market, but built for full-time commercial use. The company also showed the latest models of its DTG inkjet garment printing equipment, including a dual-head model capable of printing white ink on dark shirts.
The company also introduced a "spangle" machine that should help create new market opportunities for enterprising apparel decorators. Along the same lines, the Floriani Commercial Embroidery Division of RNK Distributing, Knoxville, Tenn., showed examples of Fuwari 3-D embroidery, another process that could open new doors for embroiderers who want to expand their repertoire.
On the apparel side, the trend continues toward fashion-forward designs, with details showing up in basics from Gildan, Montréal; Hanes, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Jerzees, Atlanta, that were previously reserved for high-end lines. Some companies are adding more upscale styles to their lines, such as the luxurious Red House line from Sanmar, Preston, Wash.
We also are seeing influences from the outdoor lifestyle, whether from the domestic market, such as new styles from Colorado Timberline, Denver, or from offshore, such as the line from Australian Spirit, Sydney, Australia, a newcomer to the U.S. market.
Other trends include the ongoing introduction of performance features such as moisture management in corporate casual apparel, as we saw in the 2007 line of Blue Generation, Long Island City, N.Y., as well as the introduction of new features and styles in performance apparel geared toward the athletic and outdoor marketplaces, as evident in Los Angeles-based Expert Performance T's brand.
You can learn more about these products and many more online at www.EMBmag.com, as well as see the products themselves at upcoming Imprinted Sportswear Shows.
