TIE sales are soaring because of the revival of the "Mod" style, a study has found.
They are up five per cent to £162million from 2004.
And experts believe it's thanks to the likes of Jude Law, Pete Doherty and Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos, who are said to have made wearing ties trendy again.
Analysts Mintel found men want to dress up more for nights out, with ties replacing open neck shirts.
They are also buying more expensive ties.
The trend comes despite the growing popularity of dressing casually in the workplace.
Researchers say tie sales will increase by another seven per cent by 2011.
Analyst David Bird said: "There has clearly been a fashion role reversal, with many men dressing down for work and dressing up for a night out on the town.
"Around 2000, tie sales were falling as casual dressing and dress down Fridays became the norm in offices, and working from home started to rise.
"But today, the growth in popularity of Mod styles means wearing suits and ties is now a fashionable choice in pubs and clubs, undoubtedly giving the UK tie market a healthy boost."
Some 37 per cent of men bought a silk tie last year, with 20 per cent opting for a polyester one.
Ties represent 53 per cent of the market for mens' accessories, which was valued at £297million last year.
Other items include hats, gloves, scarves and belts.
Bird said: "Today's British male is undoubtedly taking a greater interest in the way he looks, whether it is skincare or matching accessories with a new outfit."
